Get Rich Slowly had a roundup of car posts the other day. The real winner for me was discovering the site Beater Review. The site highlights older vehicles (10-20 years old) that can be had for a couple/few thousand or less but are still reliable and reasonably safe.

I like beaters, and my current car is probably the only one I’ve ever owned that wouldn’t fit that description. For all the repairs I’ve done to it, I’m thinking I might switch back to a beater anyway. There is something liberating about driving a beater:  no worries about city driving and parking, door dings, squeezing through narrow spaces, or when you last washed and waxed you car.  After all, each scuff and scrape is just added “character.”

Plenty of gurus out there say “buy a beater” until you pay down your debt but don’t offer much more advice than that. So, if you find yourself in need of a beater, whether by choice or necessity, check out Beater Review and get detailed reviews on what you can get, how much you can get it for, and what you need to watch for when purchasing your new beater.
